The Reverend Dr. Jonathan C. Augustine, Keynote Speaker for Southern University Honors Convocation
The Reverend Dr. Jonathan C. Augustine, the 46th senior pastor of Historic St. James AME Church (New Orleans, LA) and the national chaplain of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., served as keynote speaker for the April 19, 2017 Southern University Honors College Convocation & Academic Awards Ceremony.
In addressing the convocation’s theme, “Maintaining a Legacy of Excellence Amidst Change,” Augustine spoke from the topic “The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same,” by drawing a parallel between the university’s famed success, amid socially oppressive external forces, and the new America in which the graduates will be entering—also filled with undeniable evidence of social oppression—after the historic presidency of Barack Obama. Southern University is the largest HBCU System in the United States.
In addition to his ministerial service in the AME Church, Augustine also serves as an adjunct member of the faculties of Southern University and Jarvis Christian College and is a member of the Board of Trustees of his seminary alma mater, United Theological Seminary (Dayton, OH). Augustine has published extensively in academic journals on issues including, environmental justice, education reform, and voting rights. He also authored a book, “The Keys Are Being Passed: Race, Law, Religion and the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement,” that has been featured at the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference, Southern Christian Leadership Conference Annual Convention, and at the Essence Magazine annual music festival.
Augustine is married to Michelle Burks Augustine, and together, they have two children, Mason and Jillian.
